Greek Mythology: According to Hesiod (Greek poet) the nine Muses are the daughters of Mnemosyne (“Memory”) and Zeus.

Name/Represents:

Calliope – Epic Poetry

Clio – History

Erato – Erotic Poetry

Euterpe – Lyric Poetry

Melpomene – Tragedy

Polyhymnia – Sacred Hymns

Terpsichore – Dance

Thalia – Comedy

Urania – Astronomy

Book: Shakespeare and Company by Sylvia Beach

Sylvia Beach opened the Shakespeare and Company bookshop and lending library in Paris in 1919. Her book titled Shakespeare and Company is full of stories about her experiences.

Artists
Beach writes about Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ezra Pound, Gertrude Stein, D.H. Lawrence, and many more.

James Joyce
Beach published the book Ulysses by James Joyce.

Ernest Hemingway
Hemingway writes about Beach in A Moveable Feast, including: “No one that I ever knew was nicer to me” and “…she was delightful and charming and welcoming…”

Locations in Paris
Beach’s bookshop was originally located at 8 rue Dupuytren. She eventually moved to a larger space at 12 rue de l’Odeon. Her bookshop was closed in 1941.

There is a painting of a horse and bison in the Cave of La Pasiega in Spain that I think may be images in the Milky Way. The date of the cave painting may be about 14,000 BC.

Einstein and the Solar Eclipse

 

A little history…

A total solar eclipse was used to confirm a prediction of Einstein’s theory of general relativity.

The confirmed prediction:
The sun’s gravity bends light.

Albert Einstein:
German-born physicist.

His dates:
1879 – 1955

Who conducted the experiment:
Sir Arthur Eddington.

When:
The solar eclipse of May 29, 1919.

Meaning of the Image:
The meaning of the figure is unknown.

The figure may be about 3,000 years old.

The Lines:
The lines of the image are filled with white chalk.

Owl of Chauvet Cave in France

An image of an owl is engraved in France’s beautiful Chauvet-Pont d’Arc cave.

Where:
The cave is located in southern France (Ardeche).

When Discovered:
The cave was discovered in 1994.

Interesting Owl Feature:
The owl appears to be looking backward.

Age:
The engraving may be about 30,000 years old.

Documentary:
The film Cave of Forgotten Dreams is a wonderful documentary about Chauvet cave.
