Sylvia Beach opened the Shakespeare and Company bookshop and lending library in Paris in 1919. Her book titled Shakespeare and Company is full of stories about her experiences.
Beach writes about Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Ezra Pound, Gertrude Stein, D.H. Lawrence, and many more.
Beach published the book Ulysses by James Joyce.
Hemingway writes about Beach in A Moveable Feast, including: “No one that I ever knew was nicer to me” and “…she was delightful and charming and welcoming…”
Locations in Paris
Beach’s bookshop was originally located at rue Dupuytren. She eventually moved to a larger space at rue de l’Odeon. Her bookshop was closed in 1941.
