Sketch of Owl

An image of an owl is engraved in France’s beautiful Chauvet-Pont d’Arc cave.

The cave is located in southern France (Ardeche).

When Discovered:
The cave was discovered in 1994.

Interesting Owl Feature:
The owl appears to be looking backward.

The engraving may be about 30,000 years old.

The film Cave of Forgotten Dreams is a wonderful documentary about Chauvet cave.

Sources and for more information: (includes a photo of the actual cave owl)
