Palace of Knossos on Crete

A long, long time ago…

When Built:
The first palace was built about 1900 BC
It was destroyed and a larger palace was built about 1700 BC

Where:
Crete/Greek Island

Palace:
A palace complex

Interesting Feature:
The columns are larger at the top and smaller at the bottom

Discovered By:
Minos Kalokairinos in 1878. Archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans began excavating the site in 1900.

Civilization:
The Minoan Civilization (about 3650 BC to 1450 BC)

Why Named Minoan:
The word Minoan refers to the mythological King Minos of Crete
(associated with Theseus, the Minotaur, and the Labyrinth)
