The Rosetta Stone

The Rosetta Stone is a fragment of a stela with a decree about Ptolemy V of Egypt. The decree is inscribed in three scripts. The Rosetta Stone was used to understand Ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs.

The Three Scripts Are:
Upper Section/ Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs
Middle Section / Demotic
Lower Section / Ancient Greek
(There are some differences in the scripts)

Number of Lines in Each Script:
Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs – 14 lines
Demotic – 32 lines
Ancient Greek – 54 lines

Material:
Granodiorite

Discovered:
1799 by French Soldier Pierre-Francois Bouchard (Napoleonic expedition to Egypt)

Where Discovered:
Near Rashid (Rosetta) Egypt

Deciphered by (including):
Jean-Francois Champollion (1822)
Thomas Young

Current Location:
British Museum, London
